Henri lay motionless on top of the dining room table, where he had been since returning from his mission in the rain.

His right eye remained glued to the telescopic sight of his VSS Vintorez, and his right index finger rested on the rifle’s matte-black trigger guard. The skeleton wooden stock, with its rubber end cushion, was tucked firmly into his shoulder. The fire selector switch, just behind the trigger, was set to semiautomatic.

On the table, placed slightly to his right so he could reach it without moving, was a cell phone that he could use to activate the two IEDs he had planted on the Peugeot. The number had been keyed in—all he had to do was press the green call button. The IEDs wouldn’t be his first choice because of the certainty of widespread damage to other people, buildings, and vehicles nearby, but if need be, he would do it.

Despite the rain and gloom outside, the image through the scope remained surprisingly bright and clear. It was a high-quality piece of equipment.

However, the problem he had identified earlier remained unchanged. The line of traffic along Dreikönigstrasse was constant and slow-moving due to the roadwork, making Henri’s view of the bank’s front door more often blocked than not.

Nevertheless, he continued to concentrate, glancing occasionally at the clock on the cell phone next to him.

His patience was rewarded when finally, through a gap between a BMW SUV and a white van, he spotted four people filing out of the bank’s door at ten minutes to five.

Henri stiffened slightly. Was that them?

Yes, he was sure it was.

The first person out of the door was a woman with short black hair and glasses, wearing a dark raincoat. That was Robinson—he was certain this time. The glasses were definitely a prop. Behind her were three men in suits. All were walking briskly.

He moved the crosshairs in his scope a fraction, trying to get a bead on the woman and to work out which of the men was his other priority target, Zahavi. But two pedestrians carrying umbrellas walked across his line of sight, and the white van began to move at the same time.

The next glimpse he got of the group, a few seconds later, he saw there were now six of them. Sure enough, the man who had been sitting outside the café had joined them, confirming his theory. With them was the second black-haired woman—Leibovitch. They were all looking for an opportunity to cross the street.

But immediately, a truck drove across in front of the group and came to a halt, blocking his view again.

Henri let out a Lebanese curse.

A few seconds later, the group emerged at the rear of the truck. They were now moving quickly across the street toward the Peugeot.

He moved the scope fractionally to his left onto the first woman, Robinson, as she neared the rear of the vehicle. But as he did so, she appeared to drop something behind the car and bent over, now out of sight again.
